School Board Appreciation

SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION MONTH

January 2018

The month of January is designated as School Board Recognition Month.  This is a time to recognize the vital role of our school board members and to honor them for their work and dedication.

In Miami Public Schools, board members work to develop policies and must make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that impact our entire community.  They bear the responsibility for an annual budget of $18 million, 2,200 students, 300 employees, and eight school buildings. These board members carry out the truest form of representative government in our democracy.  They are all volunteer public servants who preserve the core of our democratic land, public education.

We do not always recognize their contribution and dedication to being a public servant.  These individuals are elected to represent us and most importantly, the interest of our children.  So, please write them a thank you note, give them a shout out on social media, and if you see them about town be sure to give them a pat on the back.  Let them know how much you appreciate them and all they do for the students at Miami.

It is interesting that four of our current board members were initially appointed to their respective seats and three have been re-elected by the voters of Miami numerous times.  I believe this speaks well of the legacy of past board members when given the task of appointing the right person and to the character and dedication of our current board by instilling confidence in our community, witnessed by the tenure of their continued service.

The men and women serving Miami Public Schools and their years of service are:  President, Harley Turner, appointed December, 2000; Vice-President, Chuck McKibben, appointed October, 2013;  Clerk, Dr. Mark Folks, appointed June, 2008; Member, Donni Long, elected, March 2004; and Member, Julie Smith, appointed March, 2018.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Hogan

Superintendent

Miami Public Schools
